Make Change Work!

A few examples how experience and leadership style is influenced

Netherlands:

As a youngster (23 years old) on an assignment, being asked to lead a team of warehouse employees. A mix of senior people and temporary workers. No leadership experience at all. This was when I understood that listening skills are very important. They make the leader understand.

Becoming a General Manager for a company where your experienced colleagues in healthcare knew you as a financial guy. With ambition yes, but no in-depth productknowledge or big commercial network. It worked out, in my 3rd year as GM the Dutch subsidiary became best-perfoming daughter in Europe. What a pride is felt by the team when this is announced.

Nordics:

To make all the 5 Nordic countries succesful a big turnaround was needed. No centrally led organization anymore but 5 local organizations focused on their own market and opportunities. Different solutions for every country. Resulting in: a broader and more diverse talent pool, much more ownership and bigger responsibility taken by different teammembers. Also a change in appreciation from customers and therefore a firm increase in business results.

Turkiye and Africa:

Adapting a local organization to improve its results had to start with a massive scaling down of teammembers, especially in logistics, warehousing and office positions. Of course, a process needed to keep the site up and running. Importance of communciation, reasoning and explanation never became more clear to me then in this process.
